Computer technology will enable better fitting lingerie

Description
Researchers at the Kyoto Institute of Technology in Japan have been working on a fully digital 3D model of the female form that they hope will allow designers to produce lingerie that fits far more comfortably than is currently possible. The 3D data will allow designers and tailors to customise their designs to specific body shapes in a way previously thought impossible.

Kensuke Nakamura and Takao Kurokawa of Osaka University began their work by examining the bodies of 560 Japanese women between the ages of 19 and 63. Laser metrology was used to map the womens bodies and develop a database of "components" that make up various shapes and sizes of person. All of this is then fed into a generic 3D model on the computer, allowing the model to be modified to mimic almost any body shape.

Statistical analysis was then used to help classify the different body shapes based on factors such as breast size and angle, neck type, shoulder slope, slimness and a variety of other variables. The two researchers described how their analysis of the female form will help produce better fitting underwear for women in the future, and allow the production of far more functional and comfortable clothes that can be used to improve posture.
