Finding a Model Agency
Model Agencies are the best way for new models to start out their modelling career. Model Agencies carry out a variety of roles such as advise and train models to work in the industry, promote models and manage their career, schedule and book models for jobs and arrange payment from clients and pass this on to the models.
There are many do's and don'ts when it comes to finding a modelling agency. These should be followed carefully to ensure that you avoid scams and don't lose money.
- Don't sign with the first agency you find until you have looked around. There are lots of agencies and there could be a better one out there for you.
- Don't go alone to the agency.
- Don't hand any money over. An agency should not charge you a joining fee. If they try to DO NOT join the agency.
- Don't use agencies that advertise in the backs of magazines or newspapers
- Don't go to the agency in your best 'model' clothes and make up. The agency will be looking for people with natural talent and a good foundation that they can work with, so be as natural as possible.
- Don't sign a contract until you understand the terms, and are happy with their terms. You might want to get a solicitor to look over it before you put your signature to it.
- Don't join an agency that says you are guaranteed work; the modelling industry is not a normal job and there are no guarantees. Its also normal to wait several months before your first booking.
- Do ask how much of a percentage of the client's payment the agency will take.
- Do ask for examples of their work and referrals of clients and models so that you can ask about them.
- Do ask to see some work samples or tear sheets of the photographers used by the agency.
- Do listen up and ask questions if you don't understand.
- Do research the agency over the internet and find out what other people have to say about them; this will help you to avoid agencies that scam their models.
- Do go to the agency for an interview. No good agency will sign you up without meeting you first.
