Eating Disorders

The world of modelling is rife with both women and men affected by eating disorders, to try and maintain the 'perfect' body. There is so much pressure on a model to fit the stereotypical stick thin, to maintain the right weight and shape in the fashion industry. Runway and catwalk models, particularly in the high end fashion genre are affected most of all, but even the most body confident plus size model has insecurities.  Eating Disorders

An eating disorder is an illness which causes serious disturbances and health implications to your everyday diet and lifestyle. They are real, treatable medical illnesses and they often coexist with other illnesses such as depression, anxiety disorders and substance abuse. Perhaps you're eating extremely small amounts of food to maintain your figure, or perhaps on the other end of the spectrum, you're severely overeating and making yourself throw up to get rid of it? Are you telling yourself that it's only a 'one off' but that 'one off' has now turned into a regular habit?

A person with an eating disorder may have started out just eating smaller portions of food or perhaps even larger amounts of food, but at some point, the urge to eat more or to eat less than is normal has spiralled out of control. Models suffer severe distress and concern about their body weight or shape everyday and are often cruelly criticised by their peers, the people they work with within the fashion industry, and even their friends. It can be very hard to keep up with eating regularly and keeping an eye on your diet, whilst you are dashing around from casting calls to casting call, or trying to balance part-time modelling with a full-time job.

Eating disorders affect both men and women and usually appear during the teen years or younger adulthood but in the modelling industry, it could be you have just started to take up the profession in later life and are shocked with the pressure to keep looking trim. It can happen at any time of a models life, and it's important to be aware of the various eating disorders which may be starting to affect you.

The main eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder but there are also several other body confidence issues and eating disorders which we will cover in this section. It is important to know that these small eating disorders can turn into huge problems and can also become life-threatening if you do not receive the appropriate treatment. Models with anorexia nervosa are 18 times more likely to die early, compared with people of similar age in the general population.

If you think that you are starting to suffer from any of the illnesses in the pages within this section then talk to a trusted friend, family member, or better still, your doctor. Read up as much information as you can and recognise the symptoms and if anything applies to you then do something about it. Modelling is a way of life but it shouldn't be a way of threatening your life. Help is out there if you need it.
