There are plenty of people out there that are happy to give advice to models and entertainers in general. A lot of these people are dishing out advice as it is what they want you to believe. They can be models who see you as a threat! Photographers that tell you to pay them £1000’s for their portfolio but do not dare pay anybody else. We are also finding more and more advice sites popping up – BEWARE these sites are profit making organisations even though they claim not to be so. One organisation sells advertising space, workshops; DVD’s and then claim not to make a profit…...Please! So we have decided to point out some FACTS rather than give advice.
The Facts
Fact 1
To apply to a model agency you do not need a professional portfolio, A good clear snap shot will suffice in the first instance. A professional portfolio should cost between £200 / £400 and no more. Not all model agencies insist on models having a professional portfolio to start off with.

Fact 2
Know your rights as of the 1st April 2008 the DTI introduced a new law which gave all entertainers a 7 day cooling of period. So legally you can ask for a refund within 7 days of signing up with a new agency
Fact 3
Legally model agencies are allowed to charge for website inclusion and model comp cards. We are not saying do not be careful with this one but it is legal for agencies to charge for these services and quite normal for them to do so. As a guideline we would suggest that you may be asked to pay between £30 / £50 per year for website inclusion and no more that £50.00 / £80.00 for 100 comp cards.
Fact 4
Stay away from scouting agencies that charge you to be introduced to a model agency. These people or cowboys place an advert in a local newspaper then book a room in a hotel you turn up and are charged a ridiculous amount of money for nothing.
Stay AWAY!!!!!
Fact 5
Do not let any agency tell you that you must use there own photographer. In fact if a model agency has there own studio and photographer BE CAREFUL! We are not saying that is the case with all agencies as some very reputable agencies do have there own studio but they tend to be some of the bigger names in the industry.
Fact 6
The modelling industry is a wonderful and lucrative world but let common sense prevail…
