Art Modelling

Art Modelling

Ok - for this type of modelling you have to be brave. Art modelling is what it says - you model for an artist who in turn will try to paint you. It could be a sculptor who employs you on a one to one basis- just you and they in a studio, in a private setting. It usually very tastefully done, and work are exchanged before the actual posing begins. You need to know right from the beginning what this job entails and you need to be 100% sure you are prepared to enter into a contract. If it is a private affair, then also be sure to check out credentials, inform loved ones where you are, just to be cautious. We're not trying to scare you here, but modelling can be quite scary in any category and it's always better to be safe than sorry. It can still be quite daunting to be stared at all day one to one, but there are also other ways to perform model art. It could also mean being the centre stage in a large class of students, all of them goggling at you! We're not trying to put you off but you need to be prepared for a lot of pairs of eyes all looking in one direction - at you.

It's not always about posing nude. It could be a semi nude project or it could even be fully clothed if the brief requires. What is essential is that you are not shy. You can't afford to be if you go down this route. It's not game for a laugh - it's a serious profession to consider and the students or artists who work with you, need you to be professional at all times.

Also consider that art modelling means staying in the same place for a very long time. Of course there will be breaks, but you need to be prepared to stay exactly as the artist or students want you positioned . This is your job and you have to be prepared so learn the brief before you take it on. You have to have stamina and you have to be fit for purpose. It sounds harsh but it's the hard facts. Art modelling is very hard work and it can also be tedious and very boring. Having said all this, the pay isn't half bad. You could be paid to lie down all afternoon if you're lucky enough!

The end product could also be amazing or it could be terrible - you never know. The certainty is this though. The artist, sculptor or student will be trying their hardest to get a likeness of you. You could have your face splashed in the papers years afterwards, or you could be forgotten without a trace. You can't afford to be precious and you can't advise or direct. You are the art model and you have to do as you're told! It's not a bad way to earn a living and it certainly means you can rest your brain for a little while between taking on other jobs.
